The wedding of the duke is being prepared in Athens, six craftsmen want to perform the piece of Pyramus and Thisbe in honor of the ruling couple and rehearse in the nearby forest. Meanwhile, the four young people Hermia, Helena, Demetrius and Lysander have a serious love problem: Hermia`s father wants her to marry Demetrius, but Lysan loves her, Helena loves Demetrius. Hermia and Lysander hide in the forest, Helena and Demetrius follow them. In this forest, however, the ruling elite royal family, Titania and Oberon, have been dispossessed by the possession of a pleasure-boy. The handworkers, like the lovers, are drawn into the magical battles of Titania and Oberon in the most bewildering way. Oberon`s court-jester Puck creates disaster with a magic flower that inspires love. After many of the characters have fallen in love and lost their lives, the end result is a happy ending: reconciliation in the elf empire, weddings with the people and a delightful performance of the craftsmen.

The Theater an der Wien (The Theatre on the Wien River) is a historic theatre on the Left Wienzeile in the Mariahilf district of Vienna. Completed in 1801, it has seen the premieres of many celebrated works of theatre, opera, and symphonic music. Since 2006, the theatre has served primarily as an opera house, hosting its own company.
While `Wien` is the German word for `Vienna`, the `Wien` in the name of the theatre is not the name of the city but rather the name of the Wien River (Wienfluss), which once flowed by the theatre site; `an der Wien` means next to (that is, on the banks of) the Wien. In modern times the name has become somewhat opaque, since the river has been covered over in this location; the covered riverbed now houses the Naschmarkt, an open-air market
