BALLETT: NUREJEW GALA
28.06.2019 | | Wiener Staatsoper
Already for the third time in the era of Manuel Legris as director of the Vienna Staatsballet, a `Nureyev Gala` decides the ballet season at the Viennese Staatsoper. The present edition of this ballet event is marked by the 75th birthday of the great dancer and choreographer.
He grew up in Uzbekistan, educated in Leningrad and engaged in the Kirov ballet, Nureyev started his career in the West after his 1961 `exciting` bustle, `one of the most spectacular in theater history.
For almost 25 years, Nureyev was also a member of the Viennese ballet - as a dancer, but also as a producer of classics such as `Swan Lake`, `Don Quixote`, `Sleeping Beauty` and `Raymonda`. Vienna was also the Schauplatz for his debut as choreographer of his first self-created ballet `Tancredi` to music by Hans Werner Henze. In 1982, Nureyev became an Austrian citizen, in 1988 honorary member of the Vienna State Opera.
With the appointment as the ballet director of the Paris Opera exactly 30 years ago, an important section in Nureye`s career began. Among the Paris dancers, who were especially encouraged by Nureyev, was Manuel Legris. As director of the Viennese national league, Manuel Legris now orientates himself in many ways to the model of his mentor.

The structure of the opera house was planned by the Viennese architect August Sicard von Sicardsburg, while the inside was designed by interior decorator Eduard van der Nüll.
On May 25, 1869, the opera house solemnly opened with Mozart`s DON JUAN in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth.
Today, the Vienna State Opera is considered one of the most important opera houses in the world; in particular, it is the house with the largest repertoire. It has been under the direction of Dominique Meyer, along with musical director Franz Welser-Möst, since September 1, 2010.
