Dance theatre in seven scenes by Christian Jost

Commissioned by the Oper Graz
The opera Dido and Aeneas, a monumental work in Baroque opera that is remembered as one of Purcell’s foremost theatrical works written in 1689, recounts the love story of Dido, Queen of Carthage and the Trojan hero Aeneas. Evil powers avert a happy ending for the two lovers. In order to fulfill a mission, Aeneas is forced to abandon Dido, who as a result desperately kills herself.
Christian Jost, the famous German composer, whose opera “Hamlet” was awarded the title ‘best world premiere of the year 2009’ by the journal “Opernwelt”, has been commissioned to write the dance theatre “DnA” for this production that refers to Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas” in music and content. The composition consist of seven scenes loosely joint to each other, forming different associative sound patterns as a basis for the choreography that reflects particular perspectives, concepts and encounters of love.
This world premiere is the third and last part of the Baroque cycle staged at the Oper Graz, following the productions “Nomaden” with music by Bach and “Messiah” with music by Handel. Darrel Toulon again creates a new score of movements that are made up for every dancer individually in every detail in order to link contemporary music with dynamic, artful choreography and allusive interactions.
