Elvis Costello (born Declan Patrick MacManus, 25 August 1954) is an English singer-songwriter.
He came to prominence as an early participant in London´s pub rock scene in the mid-1970s and later became associated with the punk New Wave genre. Steeped in word play, the vocabulary of Costello´s lyrics is broader than that of most popular songs. His music has drawn on many diverse genres; one critic described him as a ”pop encyclopedia”, able to ”reinvent the past in his own image”.
On 15 May 2010, Costello announced he would withdraw from a concert performed in Israel in opposition to Israel´s treatment of Palestinians. In a statement on his website, Costello wrote, ”It has been necessary to dial out the falsehoods of propaganda, the double game and hysterical language of politics, the vanity and self-righteousness of public communiqués from cranks in order to eventually sift through my own conflicted thoughts.”
Also in 2010 Elvis Costello appeared as himself in David Simon´s television series, Treme. Costello released the album National Ransom in autumn of 2010.
In 2011 Elvis Costello appeared as himself on Sesame Street to perform a song with Elmo and Cookie Monster, titled ”Monster Went and Ate My Red 2”, a play on (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes.
In 2011, Elvis Costello performed ”Taken for a Fool,” live from Madison Square Gardens with The Strokes.
