A legend of jazz – inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda Fitzgerald
Who is Gatsby? A charismatic dreamer? A criminal social climber? A mysterious figure with the unwavering will to reach his own Happy End? Why would he throw all these legendary parties on his sensational Long Island Estate, when he is hardly ever seen there? Is he trying to lure the love of his life? Is that what he needs all that money for? For her? For Daisy?
With «The Great Gatsby» the American writer Scott Fitzgerald created a literary monument for the zeitgeist of the Roaring Twenties – and a character as contemporary and unconventional as art déco, jazz-music and flapper dresses. It`s the story of a man who`d do anything to win back his one true love, reaching beyond the borders of reality and illusion, the future uncertain, the end always in sight.
In search of the myth that is Gatsby and the explosive atmosphere of the 1920ies Lennart Hantke, his team and students of «HSLU-Musik» use the «Box» as the starting point for this quest in the overlapping boundaries between music theatre and performance.
