GIGI
Alan Jay Lerner & Frederick Loewe

Musical in two acts
Book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner based on the novella by Colette
Music by Frederick Loewe, German translation by Robert Gilbert
The world premiere was a produced by Edwin Lester for the Los Angeles and San Francisco Civic Light Opera Associations and for Saint Subber for the Broadway.

With “My Fair Lady” the composer Frederick Loewe and the librettist Alan Jay Lerner have already created one of the most adorable pieces in the world of musical entertainment. The musical “Gigi”, based on a novella written by the French acclaimed writer Colette, is of comparable charm, taking us away to turn-of-the-century Paris.
Honoré Lachailles is a rich bon vivant of advanced age but still enjoying the company of young Parisian ladies. His nephew Gaston is very much like his uncle, but bored with the high life and his series of mistresses. Being very fond of the company of Madame Alvarez, Gaston detects that Gigi, Madame Alvarez’s granddaughter, who always fascinated him with her natural and carefree behavior, has transformed into a charmingly poised young lady. On their way to a happy ending, several misunderstandings have to be cleared, as Gigi’s aunt Alicia planned to turn her into a high-society courtesan in order to financially secure her. But Gigi is not at all interested in such a life and Gaston, who realized that he has fallen in love with Gigi, asks for her hand in marriage.
