The premiere of this opera took place less than a year since the production of Puccini’s Boheme on May 6th 1897 in Venice. Leoncavallo, who is also the author of the libretto, contrary to Puccini, adheres more strictly to the story and atmosphere of Murger’s original literary work. While Puccini’s opera was staged innumerable times here, Leoncavallo’s opera will be heard in the Czech republic after more than a hundred years. This opera was first performed in Prague in 1898 on the stage of our own theatre (at that time Neues deutches Theater).
