Le Grand Macabre
Musical Grotesque by György Ligety
«Away, you swagpot! Lick the floor, you dog! Squeek out your dying wish, you pig!» Be alarmed by the sound of the Last Trumpet! He`s coming! Who is? He is! He, the man-eater, He who cuts the ropes, He who mandates the chattering of teeth, the Master of all Maggots! Nekrotzar, the prince of hell – the Grand Macabre – emerges from his grave. According to his evil plan, the world shall perish by midnight. «Breughelland», a fantasy principality «in the umpteenth century», is both heaven and hell, familiar, cruel, beautiful, and oh so vulgar. György Ligetis pitch-black piece is a dance of the dead, where comets circuit, ministers bully their stuttering prince, and alcohol gushes through all throats. The scenes are absurd, sense- and timeless and, above all, uproariously funny. The music is onomatopoeic, satiric, full of quotes and references reminiscent of music history. It`s both a carnival and a farce, and above all a blazing example of folk culture.
This Gothic-Operetta will be staged by the renowned theatre-director Herbert Fritsch, once dubbed, by the press, «the most successful and oldest «Young Talent» of the German speaking theatre scene». From Japan to Moscow, his plays tour the world. «Le Grand Macabre» is the perfect material for him and his trademarks: a rampant lust for play, opulent imagery, relentless energy and crass entertainment full of deeper meaning, mischief and subversion.
