In the last six years of his life, Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904) consistently refused commissions from abroad to compose some more oratoria and symphonies, he was not enticed by travelling – not even to England, and not at all to America where he had been repeatedly invited by Ms. Jeannette Thurber to her New York Conservatory. He considered that period of his life closed once for all. He fully devoted himself to the task which he wanted to be the crown his creative legacy. He was composing three major operas: Kate and the Devil, Rusalka, and Armida. Dvořák started to write Rusalka to the libretto of Jaroslav Kvapil on April 21, 1900, and finished this work on November 11 of the same year – in seven months only. The poet Jaroslav Kvapil and composer Antonín Dvořák created a dreamy fairy tale about a strong, unfulfilled desire. The enthralling poetic text enhances Dvořák’s inexhaustible source of magic melodies and opalesque tones of the forthcoming era of impressionism. In The Water Nymph, theatres acquired one of the most charming works of world operatic literature.
