he Addams Family is a musical comedy with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. The show is based upon The Addams Family characters created by Charles Addams in his single-panel gag cartoons, which depict a ghoulish American family with an affinity for all things macabre. Numerous film and television adaptations of Addams´ cartoons exist, but the musical, which is the first stage show based on the characters, is based upon the cartoons rather than the television and film characters. The Addams Family is also the first production produced by Elephant Eye Theatricals.
After a tryout in Chicago, the show opened on Broadway in April 2010. The original cast featured Nathan Lane as Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia. An original Broadway cast recording was released on June 8, 2010.
The Broadway production closed on December 31, 2011. A revised national tour of North America began in September 2011.
A London production is reported to be taking place in 2016. Sources suggest that the St. James Theatre will be its host and that producers have been in talks with the authors for some time. A ´dream casting´ was drawn up by theatre gossip publications that included many of the stars of composer Andrew Lippa´s debut London concerts- also at the St. James Theatre- suggesting a possible link between its producers and those behind the transfer.
