J. Haydn: Paukenmesse
11.07.2026 | 20:00 | Wiener Stephansdom
J. Haydn – Paukenmesse
8:00 PM | St. Stephen’s Cathedral
Experience one of Joseph Haydn’s most powerful sacred works in the magnificent setting of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna: the famous Paukenmesse. This venue gives the work a particularly strong historical and emotional resonance, as Haydn himself once sang here as a choirboy, and later married his wife Aloysia in the cathedral.
The Missa in tempore belli – the Mass in Time of War – carries its title for a reason. Haydn himself gave the work this name to reflect the threat posed to Vienna by Napoleon’s troops. When it was first performed in 1796, the striking timpani passages must have had an especially unsettling effect, echoing the drumrolls of an approaching army. It is precisely this tension between solemn grandeur, inner drama, and spiritual power that makes the Paukenmesse one of the most moving masterpieces of sacred music.
Under the direction of Erasmus Baumgartner, artistic director of the Vienna Boys Choir, this great work is brought to life with exceptional musical intensity. Together with the Sing Along! Festival Choir, renowned soloists, and the Vienna Cathedral Orchestra, the result is a concert evening of remarkable brilliance that reveals Haydn’s music in all its expressive depth.
Within St. Stephen’s Cathedral, music, history, and sacred space come together to create a truly extraordinary experience. Whether as a cultural highlight during your stay in Vienna, a special evening concert, or a gift for lovers of classical music, this performance promises an evening of depth, grandeur, and musical beauty.
