Carmen Suite at Volksoper Wien
With “Carmen Suite”, Volksoper Wien presents an intense ballet evening that combines emotional tension, striking imagery, and expressive movement in a powerful way. This production brings together two choreographic voices, creating a dance experience that explores inner pressure, freedom, passion, and self-determination.
The evening opens with “Burden Loops”, a new creation by Eno Peci. At its centre are those moments before a decision, when doubt, uncertainty, and inner tension take over. The dancers move in a state of suspension, caught between expectation and disorientation, between the urge to act and the inability to move forward. The result is a compelling choreographic reflection on the weight of indecision and the tension of the unknown.
The second part features the famous “Carmen Suite” choreographed by Alberto Alonso. Set to Rodion Shchedrin’s striking arrangement, which reimagines Bizet’s celebrated music with new sharpness and rhythmic force, Alonso created a truly expressionist choreography of great intensity. At the centre stands Carmen as a strong and independent woman who fights for freedom, passion, and self-determination. The bullring setting becomes the stage for an existential struggle that reaches far beyond a simple love triangle.
“Carmen Suite” at Volksoper Wien promises an extraordinary ballet evening full of energy, drama, and powerful physical expression. It is a must-see for everyone who wants to experience dance as an emotional, visually gripping, and deeply expressive art form.
