Zur heißen Zitrone
18.02.2027 - 21.05.2027 | Wiener Volksoper
Zur heißen Zitrone at Volksoper Wien
With “Zur heißen Zitrone”, Volksoper Wien brings a witty and entertaining evening of Austro-pop, Austrian everyday life, and allotment garden culture to the stage. Set between spritzers, cheese toast, club politics, neighbourhood gossip, and the constant defence of personal green space, this production offers a humorous and sharply observed look at Austrian society.
At the centre of the story is the club pub “Zur heißen Zitrone” – the place where the members of the Volksoper allotment garden association gather to chat, vote, drink, celebrate, and occasionally argue. Long-time locals, newcomers, artistic bohemians, and pensioners all come together here, united by one thing: the dream of owning a small patch of paradise. But where people live closely side by side, conflict is never far away. The hedge is too high, the apricot tree hangs over the fence, and breaking the afternoon quiet hours is simply unacceptable.
“Zur heißen Zitrone” tells the stories of this uniquely Austrian microcosm with charm, humour, and strong recognisable detail. Tying everything together is the music: Austro-pop. Audiences can look forward to songs by Wolfgang Ambros, Georg Danzer, STS, Marianne Mendt, Udo Jürgens, Ludwig Hirsch, Voodoo Jürgens, Bilderbuch, EAV, and many more. The result is a lively and nostalgic evening full of atmosphere, humour, and Austrian spirit.
At Volksoper Wien, this production combines entertainment, social observation, and musical nostalgia in a very special way. Performed in Austrian everyday language with English surtitles, it offers both local audiences and international visitors an enjoyable and distinctive theatre experience.
