Violetta Valéry, a young Parisian courtesan, decides to change her life out of love for Alfredo, to leave Paris, its luxury and its misdemeanours, and to move to the country. The two lovers live happily ever after, but one day Alfredo's father Germont turns up: He demands that Violetta leave Alfredo for good, as their disgraceful cohabitation threatens to destroy the marriage of his other daughter, Alfredo's sister. Violetta tries to resist, but in the end, convinced by Germont, she writes a farewell letter to Alfredo in which she explains that she is homesick for Paris and her former life. Alfredo, desperate with anger and disappointment, reaches her and publicly insults her by throwing money at her feet. Violetta, who is suffering from consumption, is now dying when Alfredo learns the truth and asks for her forgiveness. After seeing him for the last time, Violetta dies.
